Ontje Montjes Franssen, * 9.2.1817 in Suurhusen, Ambt Emden, Oostfriesland, ~
16.2.1817 in Suurhusen, merchant,
draper,

Ontje Montjes Franssen moved to Zwolle with his wife, Anna Maria Esser, in 1845 and became quite wealthy with the trade in drapery. In 1860 he bought a handsome building located at Melkmarkt 10 , where he founded a successful ladies' fashions store and drapery 'Franssen & Co.' and where lived here with his family. Around 1870 he built 6 houses in the Terpelkwijkstraat, nrs. 4-6-8-10-12 and bought several more, all in Zwolle.

Jozef Anton Franssen lived with his family in the Terpelkwijkstraat nr. 8 |
Fortune brought him no happiness, though. When Ontje Montjes Franssen died in 1881, he had fathered eight children but only one daughter, Maria Helena, and one son, Jozef Anton, survived him. He left an inheritance worth 122231,66 1/2 gulden. After payment of the funeral, 149 gulden, the widow received fl. 61115,83 and the children (half of) fl. 60966,33. O.M. Franssen had been a talented businessman. In his will several houses in Zwolle are bequeathed: 1 in the Nieuwstraat, 2 in the Bitterstraat, 1 in the Sassenstraat, 2 in the Ter Pelkwijkstraat and half-ownership of 5 houses in the Kerkstraat. He clearly was a man with a modern vision, investing in American railway companies, owning $ 1000 worth of shares both the California & Oregon and the Chicago South Western and he invested in Russian and Baltic railways, too. His house was lighted with gas and on his list of creditors we find 3 booksellers.
